August ‘11 and I’m in a Catholic church up-state NY that feels hotter than the depths of hell. Apparently 100F is a normal temperature for this time of year on the East coast, when I had only thought it possible for somewhere like the surface of the sun.
During the 45 minute ceremony whilst my mind wanders to questioning the meaning of life the Universe and the likelihood of dying from dehydration through sweating out all my bodily fluids, I begin to feel like somewhere along the I80, instead of the exit for the Finger Lakes, we turned off to 1952. Judging by the vows the priest is ranting about and the impractical clothes everyone is wearing, it’s almost certainly the case.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an atheist, I lack the courage of conviction to firmly believe in nothingness. I’m as clueless as anyone spiritually and I’d be the last person to knock anyone’s faith. But the point I’m making and the point of the English Bachelor is this:
In this age, when more marriages fail than succeed, when you can buy your bride online, when it’s easier to meet a mate on Match.com and rate their performance on Yelp- should we be looking for a partner? a soulmate? does such a person exist and do we all really want to find them?
